National Coming Out Day

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is observed annually on October 11 as a day to celebrate and affirm the courage it takes to live openly and authentically as LGBTQIA+. It serves as a reminder that visibility and representation are vital in fostering understanding, acceptance, and equity.

The first National Coming Out Day was celebrated in 1988, marking the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The observance was co-founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary, two advocates who believed that coming out and living truthfully were essential steps toward creating social change.

At Sonoma State University, we honor this day by uplifting the voices and experiences of our LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and faculty. Through collaborations among campus departments, student organizations, and community partners, the Office of Institutional Equity and Belonging supports programs and events that encourage reflection, connection, and celebration of authenticity and belonging.

We recognize that coming out is a personal and ongoing journey—one that looks different for everyone. Whether you are out, questioning, or an ally, National Coming Out Day invites all of us to build a campus community grounded in compassion, visibility, and respect.
