Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a national observance honoring the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders whose heritage has profoundly shaped the United States. This month recognizes both the rich legacies and the complex histories that have influenced—and been influenced by—the AAPI community’s experiences in this country.
At Sonoma State University, we observe AAPI Heritage Month in April to ensure that our students, staff, and faculty can actively participate before the conclusion of the academic year. This allows us to dedicate a full month to celebrating and uplifting our Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander communities.
We begin this month by acknowledging and condemning the acts of violence and hatred directed toward AAPI communities. Through the work of the AAPI Heritage Month Planning Committee, Sonoma State offers events and programs that promote solidarity against racism, foster a sense of belonging, and celebrate the richness and vitality of AAPI identities and cultures.
